Schobel camp set

The third annual Schobel Football Camp and Golf Tournament Fundraiser is scheduled for this weekend.

The football camp will take place Friday, July 11 with a fifth through eighth grade session from 8-10:30 a.m. and a ninth through 12th grade session taking place from 1:30-4 p.m. that afternoon.

The cost of the camp is $30. Entry forms can be picked up at the administration office at Columbus High School and Columbus State Bank.

Aaron Schobel, of the Buffalo Bills, Matt Schobel, of the Philadelphia Eagles and Bo Schobel, of the Arizona Cardinals will once again be instructing athletes on many aspects of the game, including passing, defensive and offensive strategies and so on.

Former college football athletes also coaching will be Christian Rodriguez, formerly of Texas A&M; Tye Gunn, Jon Mather, Quint Ellis and Brady Barrick, formerly of TCU; and J.D. Zimmerhanzel, formerly of Angelo State.

Matt Schobel said he, Aaron and Bo and the other camp coaches are excited about instructing in the upcoming camp to once again have a chance to work with the aspiring football players in teaching fundamentals and the spirit of the game.

"We always have a good time working with the kids," Matt Schobel said. "We look forward to once again having fun coaching at the camp this year."

Campers are expected to bring their own athletic attire including shoes, shorts and shirts.

In order for an athlete to be able to participate in the camp, they must have turned in their liability forms.

Walk ups are accepted during the day of the camp as long as forms are completed.

The Schobel Golf Tourn-ament is scheduled for Saturday, July 12 at the Columbus Golf Club.

Silent auction items will include a Tony Dorsett autographed Dallas Cowboys' helmet, an Earl Campbell autographed Houston Oilers' helmet and a Mack Brown autographed Texas Longhorns' helmet.

The Texas A&M football helmet signed by Mike Sherman will not be available in the silent auction as previously announced but will be replaced by an Arizona Cardinals' helmet signed by quarterback Matt Leinart.

Matt Schobel said he would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. John Massey, Columbus Ballparks Renovations Inc. Committee Chairman Doak Hartley, CHS head football coach and Athletic Director Brent Mascheck, Robert Russell, and all of the other coaches and supporters who assist in organizing the camp and golf tournament.

"I would like to thank everyone involved including the whole community for making this event a success this year," Matt Schobel said.

All proceeds from the Schobel Golf Tournament fundraiser and silent auctions go to benefit the football complex renovation project.
