The Texas Tri-County 17-18 Babe Ruth All-Star baseball team went undefeated in the South Texas State Cham-pionship Series against Del Rio Friday through Saturday, July 11-12 at Strickland Field in Weimar.
Tri-County defeated Del Rio in game one 4-0 Friday night.
Former Weimar Wildcat Drew Quinney got the win from the mound, throwing only 79 pitches in a three-hit shutout.
Quinney struck out nine batters and recorded 0 walks.
Tri-County’s defense kept Del Rio from producing any type of effective offense.
“Hallettsville’s Aaron Alvarez made a terrific diving catch in left field against the first batter of the game and Columbus’ Thommy Ostert robbed the third hitter of the game with a great diving backhand stop of a hard hit ball near third base,” said Tri-County Coach Jack Crandall.
Columbus’ Barrett Richter and Jonathan Stavinoha also stopped would-be hits, with Stavinoha making a sliding play on a grounder and Richter handling a line drive in right field.
At the plate, the Tri-County baseball team was able to come up with a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Cuero’s Jennings Boothe led off the offense with a double to right-center. Bellville’s Joe Tallerine bunted the ball and Boothe scored when the Del Rio pitcher threw the ball away in an attempt to make the play at third base.
Tri-County went on to add three more runs in the third on four consecutive base hit singles. Bellville’s Kyle Mueller and Ryan Hackemack recorded one out hits.
Ostert drove in Mueller with a single through the left side of the infield and Quinney followed Tri-County’s offensive attack with a hit to right-center.
Del Rio threatened with a double, fly out and single to put runners at second and third base. However, Quinney struck out the following batter and then Richter hauled in the final out on a liner to right field.
The Tri-County team took the series away from Del Rio with a 13-0 win Saturday evening, July 12 at Weimar.
The All-Stars recorded 13 runs on 12 hits and four home runs.
Yoakum’s Covey Morrow started off the game from the mound for Tri-County, before Bellville’s Garrett Huebner came in to pitch in the bottom of the fourth. Weimar’s Chance Kansteiner finished the contest in the bottom of the sixth, retiring the Del Rio offense.
