The combination of NFL football players, a golf course and a supportive community prove that fundraisers can bring out large groups of people for a positive cause.

The third annual Schobel Football Golf Classic Tournament and Fundraiser, which took place at the Columbus Golf Club Saturday, July 12, turned out to be an overall success. More than $16,000 was raised to benefit the Columbus Football Complex Renovation Project.

Columbus Ballparks Ren-ovations Inc. Football Com-plex Committee Chairman Doak Hartley said the combination of the Schobel Football Camp, which took place Friday, July 11 and the golf tournament added approximately $14,000 to go towards the renovations for the athletic facilities.

He said that Todd and Trey Baumgart each added a $1,000 donation to go to the football complex renovation project to increase the amount raised to over $16,000 during the fundraising weekend.

“Everybody had a great time,” Hartley said.

Nineteen teams participated in the fundraising golf tournament.

Taking first place in the tournament was Team Heffley, recording 13 and under in competition and Team Black Creek Drilling took second place with 12 and under.

Hartley said he would like to thank Buffalo Bills’ Defensive End Aaron Schobel, Philadelpia Eagles’ Tight End Matt Schobel and Arizona Cardinals’ Defensive End Bo Schobel along with their former college football teammates and football colleagues for their overall instructing at the football camp and participation in the golf tournament.

CBRI Football Complex committee member and 2007 Columbus High School Athletic Hall of Honor Inductee Ernest Baumgart Jr. spoke highly of how this year’s Schobel Golf Classic went on without a hitch.

“The golf tournament went smoothly,” Ernest Baumgart said. “Lots of people participated in making it one of our best turnouts.”

He said there were many hole sponsors and that the many teams competing made it fun and exciting.

“It gets a little better every year,” Ernest Baumgart said. “We finished much earlier than anticipated.”

Hartley also expressed appreciation for those participating in the football helmet silent auction over the weekend. The Earl Campbell Houston Oilers helmet went to Drymalla Construciton for $1,500, the Mack Brown Texas Longhorns helmet went to Jim Stein for $930, the Tony Dorsett Dallas Cowboys helmet went to Matt Schobel for $750 and the Matt Leinart Arizona Cardinals football helmet went to Phillip Garcia for $300.

Hartley said Columbus High School Head Football Coach Brent Mascheck put in a full effort in planning the football camp and golf tournament weekend event.

“He worked tirelessly in putting this thing together,” Hartley said.

Hartley said the entire CBRI Football Complex Committee, local volunteers and also everyone involved in putting together the fundraiser would like to thank Todd Barten and Jeff Steger for giving them a great deal for use of the golf facility for the annual tournament.

Hartley also expressed his appreciation for Aaron, Bo and Matt Schobels’ efforts in making the fundraiser weekend, for the third year in a row, something special and memorable for everyone involved.

“It is quite rare to have three young men from the same family competing in the NFL from the same small town,” Hartley said. “We appreciate their efforts in giving back to the community.”
