Four Gators advance to state meet

The Eagle Lake Gators competed in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Region 1 Meet Saturday, July 12 at Texas City with four Eagle Lake swimmers earning the opportunity to compete at the state swim meet.
Jennifer Rodgers, Gabriella Ecuer, Hannah Emmons and Allyssa Young placed second in the regional meet in the girls’ 13-14-year-old 200-yard medley relay and Jackson Basilier, Dylan Skinkis, Taylor Reed and Aaron Barajas placed fourth in the boys’ 13-14 200-yard freestyle relay.
Ecuer also placed first in the girls’ 13-14-year-old 50-yard backstroke and placed second in the 50-yard freestyle, Hannah Ortiz placed fifth in the girls’ 15-17 100-yard individual medley and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay, Barajas placed seventh in the boys’ 13-14 50-yard backstroke and Nathan Mestas placed seventh in the boys’ 15-17-year-old 200-yard freestyle.
Other Gators who competed in the regional swim meet were Sharon Dorsten, Dakota Norwood, Lindsey Pettigrew, Taylor Reed, Haley Reynolds, Jonathan Swint, Elizabeth Stokes and Logan Webb.
Ecuer, Emmons, Rodgers and Young will represent the Gators at the state swim meet in San Antonio Sunday, July 27 at Palo Alto College. They qualified for the event in the 200-yard medley relay at the regional meet.
“I am really excited about the swimmers moving on to state,” said Jeanne Young, Eagle Lake Gators team representative. “They worked really hard to get there.”
The four Gators will be among the 10,000 athletes expected to compete in the 2008 Tesoro TAAF Games of Texas July 24-27.
Along with swimming competition, the TAAF Games of Texas also include archery, badminton, baseball, bowling, boxing, disc golf, fencing, golf, gymnastics, lifeguard competition, racquetball, sand volleyball, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and wiffleball.
During the Opening Ceremony Friday, July 25, a local rhythm group will lead the parade of athletes onto the field at Wolff Stadium.
Presenters will include Olympic gold medalist Josh Davis and the TAAF officials.
Entertainment will be provided by the Radio Disney performance troupe.
TAAF Athletes of the Year will light the official 2008 Tesoro TAAF Games of Texas cauldron and the evening will end with a fireworks display.
