Henneke shoots at state competition

A Columbus High School senior recently competed at the Texas State 4-H Champi-onships in San Antonio.
Cody Henneke, a three-time state 4-H competitor and a member of the 4-H Texas shotgun team who won first at the 4-H National Cham-pionships in June, made his fourth appearance at the state event.
The competitions took place at the National Shooting Complex July 22-26 with Henneke shooting against top competitors from all over the state.
Henneke said that what was more stressful than facing his opponents was the severe weather that took place during the week in San Antonio.
“Tornados came close to hitting a couple of times,” Henneke said.
Henneke finished with scores of 96 out of 100 in skeet shooting, 96 out of 100 in trap, 36 out of 50 in international skeet, 43 out of 50 in internatonal trap, 85 out of 100 in sporting clays; and 37 out of 50 in five-stand competition.
Henneke did not take first in any event, but with having high scores in numerous shotgun shooting competitions, was able to finish in the top five in several events.
Henneke said, overall, he was not as happy with the results as he has been in past state competitions. However, with his Texas teams win at 4-H nationals back in June and with a solid standing at state, he is prepared the challenging National Sporting Clays competitions taking place at San Antonio in October and November.
“I will be trying to earn more All-American points,” Hen-neke said.
Henneke added that earning enough points to become classified as a first team All-American would earn him higher standing in his shotgun shooting career.
“The NSCA consists of different classes of competitors,” Henneke said. “They consist of the most basic of E for beginners to a D, C, B, A, AA and the highest being a M class for masters.”
Henneke advanced from the D class to the Master class within just one of competing.
“I am focusing on continuing to shoot in competitions throughout my senior year,” Henneke said.
He said his main goal is to rank high in competitions, in hope of competing in shooting competitions at Blinn College in Brenham and eventually, achieving his dream of being accepted to St. Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., the number one ranked shooting school in the nation.
