By Jacob Truchard, Sports Writer

The Rice Raiders’ High School varsity football team were victorious at Edna, shutting down the Cowboys to move to 2-0 Friday night, Sept. 5.

The Raiders defeated the Cowboys 35-0 in a game that head Coach Brad Dumont said the athletes showed great improvement from week one, cutting down on turnovers.

“We played very well,” Dumont said. “Off-ensive/defensive linemen Trent Popp and Samuel Lugo were back from injuries to help us get the win.”

Dumont added that the Raiders’ defense played well, limiting the Cowboys to under 100 yards.

Ziggy Foster scored the first touchdown of the night for the Raiders with a 9-yard run with 16 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Quarterback Myles Dumont’s extra point kick attempt was good and the score was Raiders 35, Edna nothing.

Foster made his second trip into the end zone with a 1-yard run with 9:36 remaining in the first quarter. Dumont’s kick was on target and the score was Raiders 14, Cowboys 0.

Dumont connected to Mario Hull for a 26-yard touchdown pass with 6:17 remaining in the first half. Dumont’s kick was good and the Raiders extended their lead to 21-0.

Dumont recorded a 37-yard touchdown pass to Marquis Toliver with 13 seconds remaining in the first half. Dumont’s kick was good and the score was Raiders 28, Cowboys nothing.

The Raiders scored their final touchdown of the night when Foster ran 37 yards to the end zone with 8:38 remaining in the third quarter. Dumont’s kick was on target and the Raiders sealed the win 35-0.

Offensively, the Raiders recorded a total of 410 yards and 23 first downs. They fumbled the ball three times with one lost fumble to the Cowboys and recorded five penalties for 35 yards.

The Cowboys recorded a total of 76 offensive yards and four first downs. They fumbled the ball four times with one lost to the Raiders and the team recorded four penalties for 27 yards.

Dumont recorded 10 completions out of 18 attempts for the Raiders for 162 yards and two touchdowns.

Leading receivers for the Raiders were Hull with six receptions for 109 yards and one touchdown; and Toliver with two receptions for 42 yards and one touchdown.

Leading rushers for the Raiders were Foster with 22 carries for 165 yards with three touchdowns; Michael Scott with nine carries for 39 yards; and Dumont with eight carries for 28 yards.

Leading rushers for the Cowboys were Fletcher Robinson with six carries for 28 yards; and Derrick Hines with eight carries for 16 yards.

Defensive standouts for the Raiders were Tanner Williams with seven tackles; Cody Lantelme with seven tackles; and Jerome McAfee with six tackles.

The junior varsity Raiders “blue” team lost to the Edna Cowboys at Altair 16-14 and the JV “white” Raiders lost to the Cowboys 22-0 Thursday, Sept. 4.

The JV Raiders football teams will take on the Sealy Tigers at Altair with the first game scheduled at 5 p.m.

The varsity Raiders will take on the 3A Tigers at Sealy Friday night, Sept. 12 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

“The Tigers are a top 10 3A football team and we are going to have our hands full,” Dumont said. “We are going to have to play a perfect football game offensively and defensively to come home with the win.”
