Raiders win in quarterfinals game

The undefeated Rice Raiders varsity football team made it one step closer to a Class 2A Division I state crown, defeating the George West Longhorns at Memorial Stadium in Victoria Saturday, Nov. 29.

The Raiders were victorious against the Longhorns 26-13 in a Class 2A Region IV Division I Quarterfinals match up.

“We were very excited about getting the win over George West in a real challenge,” said Rice Raider head football coach Brad Dumont. “It was also great to win the regional championship for the second year in a row.”

It was also the second time in school history that the Raiders have advance to the state semi-final round of football playoff competition.

The Raiders recorded 306 rushing yards and 58 passing yards.

Leading the way offensively for the Raiders was Ziggy Foster with 306 yards rushing on 22 carries with two touchdowns.

Quarterback Myles Dumont recorded three completions out of 10 attempts for 58 yards and two touchdowns.

Leading receivers for the Raiders were Marquis Toliver with two receptions for 36 yards and one touchdown and Mario Hull with one reception for 22 yards and a touchdown.

Defensive standouts for the Raiders were Cody Lantelme with two solo tackles and 19 assisted tackles; Damian Stevens with two solo tackles and 13 assisted tackles; Chris Dorsey with two solo tackles, 12 assisted tackles and one forced fumble; Chito Vasquez with five solo tackles and nine assisted tackles; Kevin Ellis with one solo tackle and six assisted tackles; Dewey Pettus with one solo tackle and six assisted tackles; Tanner Williams with one solo tackle and five assisted tackles; Carlos Sosa with 10 assisted tackles and a fumble recovery; Erik Gold with one solo tackle and four assisted tackles; and Tim Morales with one solo tackle and a fumble recovery.

The Raiders will now take on the 12-0 Kirbyville Wildcats in a semi-final state football playoff at Turner Stadium in Humble, Friday, Dec. 5, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

“They are ranked number one in the state and we are getting ready for a real challenge,” Dumont said.

Pre-sale tickets went on sale for the football playoff Monday, Dec. 1 at all campuses within the school district at $4 a student and $7 an adult. All prices at the gate will be $7.
