Youth JV football Cards go undefeated

It was another successful year for Columbus Youth Football in 2008 with the junior varsity team winning it all, the varsity making it to the Super Bowl and the Rookies team recording a winning season.
The JV Cardinal youth football team went 9-0 for the season, defeating La Grange at Schulenburg 25-0, Saturday, Nov 19 in the Youth Football Super Bowl.
“The boys played hard all year,” said Cardinal JV football head coach David Neisner. “At the beginning of the season, the kids said they were going to win the Super Bowl. They got their mind set to do it and got it done.”
Scoring in the championship game was Ke-Andre Hurd with a 3-yard touchdown run and a 30-yard run; Marcus Olivarez with a 60-yard reverse run and Brandon Reyes on a fumble recovery.
During the regular season, the Cardinals defeated Eagle Lake 20-6, were victorious against Schulenburg 15-0, beat Weimar 35-0, defeated La Grange, 20-6, conquered Smithville 38-0, were victorious against Lost Pines of Bastrop 19-0, beat the first Giddings team 14-6 and won against the second Giddings team 13-12.
The varsity Cardinal youth football team lost the Giddings Buffalos in a close game 20-13 at Schulenburg, Nov. 19.
Scoring for the Cardinals were Detri’yon Carter with a touchdown run, Eugene Shorter with a touchdown run and Jartavius Venghuas with an extra point conversion run.
The Cardinals finished the year 6-3 overall.
The team consisted of Darius Perrino, Brett Conwill, Daytron Johnson, Carter, Travis Neumann, Alexce Marshall Jr., Venghaus, Justin Little, Juwan Almeida, La trell Godley, Evan Shemka, Christian Pharr, Brad Pope, Andrew Dvorak, Christian Juarez, Travis Neuendorff, Kohl Pickett, Cody Peterson, Jonathan Estrada, Lawrence Keys, Eloy Flores, Drake Herrera, Micheal Owens, Valentin Ibarra, Joshua Venghaus, Jon Rawson Pryor, Jaelon Hancock and Shorter.
Head coach of the youth football varsity Cardinals team was Jimmy Carter. Assistant coaches were Tenneill Almeida and Simon Herrera.
The Colmbus Rookies did not make it to the Super Bowl, but finished the year with a 4-3 record.
The Cardinals lost the first two games of the year against Giddings and La Grange, but defeated Smithville. They lost to Eagle Lake in a close game to eliminate their chances at a playoff berth, but went on to win the remaining three games against Schulenburg, Lost Pines of Bastrop and Weimar.
“Even after they lost to Eagle Lake and no longer had a chance at a playoff, the guys never gave up and finished the season winning the last three games,” said Marcus Gonzales, Rookies football coach. “They kept their head up and finished off strong.”
The 2008 Cardinal Rookies included Adrian Reyes, Shawn Reyes, Mitchell Hedstrom, Dalton Kapel, Ke’sean Williams, Kolton Brod, Christopher Neumann, Dayne Schobel, Chandler Kilpatrick, Alex Juarez, Marshall Krpec, Jaylen Toro, Tyree Simcik, Henry Poncio, Ryan Dishman and Darion Jones.
Head coach was Lupe Juarez and assistant coaches were Gonzales, Chris Krpec and Bubba Kapel.
