The volleyball season is drawing near to a close as the teams of Colorado County approach with different trajectories following the regular season finale. The two teams that faced off for the second time this season, no. 4 ranked Columbus and Rice, have drastically different plans after the conclusion of the season. For Columbus, they’re planning on giving their best efforts in postseason competition with aspirations of a back-to-back final four appearance and a potential state title. The Lady Raiders will not be making the playoffs, but they’ll be hoping to go into the offseason on a strong note and potentially create more momentum heading into next season.

Against the rival Hal lettsvi l le Brahmas, Columbus committed to the run game as they finished with a pair of century- mark runners. They didn’t neglect the passing game either as they finished with a 100-yard receiver as well in a 35-13 win.

After a hard-fought game and a fourth quarter touchdown, the Raiders were able to take the advantage over their opponents by scoring over 27 points for the fourth time in a row in a 28-27 victory for Rice.

This week, each team had the chance to compete in their respective district meets as runners vied for a chance to claim a district championship as well as a spot in the regional championship meet. Rice came away as champions from their performance as those runners as well as the best from around the county will continue on to the next level in Corpus Christi a few weeks from now.

Read moreThe Weimar Wildcats didn’t get off to the start they wanted to in last week’s game against the Thorndale Bulldogs. After scoring a first quarter touchdown, the Wildcats were shut down in the middle quarters while their opponents built a lead. Weimar cut the deficit using a big fourth quarter on both ends, but they couldn’t get over the hump as their comeback fell short in a 36-28 defeat at home. Weimar had some difficulties early in this game. After holding their opponents to just one touchdown and an extra point in the first quarter, they allowed the Bulldogs to score two touchdowns in each of the next two quarters as they struggled to find a solution on the defensive side. Thorndale took advantage of Weimar’s defense through the air and finished the game with over 220 passing yards. Weimar allowed nearly 160 yards on the ground from their opponents as well. The defensive struggles along with the Wildcats’ inability to extend drives in the second and third quarters had Weimar going into the fourth quarter with a 34-6 deficit. However, it was in this period that both sides of the ball started turning up the temperature.
Read moreThe Weimar varsity volleyball team’s season is coming to an end, and the Ladycats have only five games left to try to reach as high in the district standings as they can. Their climb was made slightly more difficult after they suffered a difficult loss to the Schulenburg Lady Horns. They were able to find scoring opportunities but could not slow their opponents’ offense enough to prevent a three-sets-to-one defeat on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Stats from their end-of-the week game against Ganado were not available at the time of publication.

There were five contestants who picked seven game-winners out of eight, taking us to the tiebreaker for first place as well as second place. Randy Huebel took second place, as the next closest in scores for the tiebreaker game.
