ALTAIR – The Rice Raiders varsity football team felt like their offense was much better than their lone score performance against the no. 2 ranked Columbus Cardinals for their first loss of the season. They got their chance to prove it as their offense returned along with plenty of former Raiders for Homecoming on Sept. 15 against Palacios. Rice found their biggest scoring performance of the season, breaking the 50-point margin for the first time and finished the game with a 56-7 victory.

Every runner who competed picked up their personal bests this season as they finished with several top placements in the competition. Both the boys and the girls were represented in the top 10, and a few others were just outside of the top 10 as Weimar completed a strong outing as a team.

Cross country runners from St. Anthony’s Catholic School in Columbus, St. Michael’s Catholic School in Weimar, Sacred Heart Catholic School in Hallettsville, Schulenburg High School, and Columbus High School joined forces to raise funds for the Freedom Service Dogs of America, Tunnels to Towers 9/11 Foundation, the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust, and the National Purple Heart Honor Mission. Students were joined by the St. Anthony Catholic School Principal, her husband, and two parents for the evening’s fun run, and the event was coordinated by Sarah Moore, St. Anthony’s Athletic Director.

In a field of 48 girls and 46 boys, the Cardinals had several runners finish in the top 20 with a pair of girls finishing in the top 10 of their side of the competition. Their performance continues a strong run for Columbus as they have had several quality outings in a row as a team.

In the years of the old Eagle Lake High school and early years of Rice Consolidated, the Raiders took their opportunities and an advantage during their early matchups. Now in the modern era, the Cardinals have turned things around with a higher level of success as they have defeated Rice several seasons in a row during their annual game. Their most recent matchup was a continuation of the Cards’ advantage as Columbus secured a 56-7 victory over the Rice Raiders.

They still have more ground to cover as they got their first look against the team that is favored to take the district championship this season: the Columbus Lady Cardinals. The match proved to be reflective of the dynamic between a team that is in the process of rebuilding and one that had just made a state semifinal appearance the year before. Columbus showed why they are currently one of the top teams in the state with a three-game sweep over the Lady Raiders.
