At around the midway point of the season, teams can assess what they have done up to that point and plan out their goals and next steps for the rest of the season. The Ladycats of Weimar have an interesting assessment period ahead of them after their start to this season. They have gotten to a strong start with a quality record through the non-district portion of the season. However, they have had somewhat of a shaky start to the district portion of the season. Despite the impressive 10-3 overall record, they entered into the Christmas weekend with a 1-2 district record that they are hoping to recover from as they enter the spring semester portion of their season.
Read moreThe Wildcat basketball team’s last game before the holidays gave them some reminders at how far they have come and allowed them a chance to see how much growth they have gotten from their best players. However, they also received a heartbreaking reminder that there is still more to do to get better as they suffered a tough, comefrom- behind defeat at the hands of HCYA. The Wildcats played a strong game and entered the fourth with a lead, but they could not hold on as they fell by a 51-50 final margin.
Read moreThe Weimar Wildcats are in a much better state at this point of this season compared to where they were at the same time last season. Last year, the Wildcats found only four total wins throughout the entire season. They seem to have made some vital improvements as they have nearly matched that total with half of the season remaining. According to the results posted to Max-Preps.com, Weimar stands at 3-9 this season, just one win away from matching their total last year. The Wildcats will be looking to find some momentum and improve their fortunes heading into the latter half of the season.
Read moreWhat a great feeling to be playing football after Thanksgiving once again. There are so many highs and lows in sports. The game against Franklin had them all. Sometimes you come out on top and sometimes you don’t. Two great teams battling it out until the bitter end. That is what playoff football is all about. Unfortunately, this time we did not come out on top. You can always be the Monday Morning Quarterback and play the “woulda, shoulda, coulda” game.

The competition between the flagship high schools in Eagle Lake and Columbus extends from the gridiron to the hardwood and every sport in between. Each school has a few sports in which they hold the advantage over the other as each school has striven to build winning programs. At least recently, Columbus has had the advantage on the hardwood over the Raiders as both the boys’ and girls’ teams have won swept the season series for the past few seasons. That disparity continued in their most recent addition to the all-time series as both varsity teams for Columbus defeated the varsity teams for Rice with double-digit margins of victory. The Lady Cards started the Columbus-hosted doubleheader with a big 88-35 win over the Lady Raiders. The Raiders followed with a high-energy performance against the Cards, but Columbus got a huge boost from the return of Colton Pitchford to the lineup to begin his senior season. He led a strong offensive outing for the Cards and helped them secure a 65-52 victory over Rice.

They had even more difficulties on the offensive end as they failed to reach 30 points in a game for the fourth time in the last five games. Many of the struggles the Lady Raiders have been dealing with all season were a factor once again in their game against the Brahmettes as they fell in a 61-21 defeat.
Read moreAfter taking a difficult loss at the hands of the Cards last week, the Rice Raiders responded with one of their gutsiest wins of the season as they played through their first overtime period of the year. After falling behind by a minor lead early in the game, Rice fought their way back into it by outscoring their opponents in the fourth quarter to force the overtime period. The Raiders got some quality close-game experience after playing the Hallettsville Brahmas to the end-of-regulation tie and then outplaying them in the overtime session to take a 67-64 victory.
