Read moreThe Columbus varsity football team had somewhat of an unlucky draw for their first round after pulling last year’s state champions, the Lorena Leopards. The Leopards were responsible for knocking Columbus out in the third round of the playoffs last year and giving the Cards their worst loss since 2020. There are a few reasons why this year could be different for the Cards if they’re hoping to avoid an early exit from the playoffs. First off, Lorena had two seniors on last year’s team that did a majority of the damage in that game. Running back Rhett Hanson and quarterback Ryne Abel torched Columbus during last season’s 62-13 blowout. Hanson rushed for over 100 yards on just 15 carries and had two touchdowns. Abel threw out over 300 yards of passing offense as well as five touchdowns.
