In week 13 of Football Fever, the Columbus Cardinals defeated C.H. Yoe in the hunt for State Championship title. The playoffs have been a little unpredictable this year as The Citizen had only one person, Sandra Glenn of Columbus, pick seven of the eight teams correctly. There was a big fight for second place this week with six people who picked six teams correctly. Going to the tie breaker game for second place gave us Nathan Beane of Columbus with the closest score prediction. Football Fever is going for another round in this week’s paper and all entries are to be turned in this week Thursday by 5 pm.

Read moreThe varsity and sub-varsity basketball teams for both Weimar and Columbus got their first action of the season when they faced each other in Columbus for a preseason scrimmage. The varsity teams were in slightly different situations as Columbus has potential players who have yet to finish their football season. However, the Cards got a big performance from one of their returning players to claim a big 35-20 victory over the Wildcats.

It was close throughout, but the Ladycats got just enough scoring and defense in the second half to hold on to the lead they created in the first. Weimar finished the game with a 42-39 win after a strong defensive performance to maintain the lead in the final period.

Unfortunately for Columbus, the state semis have proven to be a difficult obstacle to hurdle as their title dreams were claimed by the Final Four for the second straight year. The Lady Cards battled with Gunter, last year’s championship runners up, to two tight sets before running out of steam in the final game of a three-set sweep.
