Daniel Zepeda’s first choice turned out to be the right one after all.
Read moreThe no. 3 Lady Cards have been proving that they are one of the top programs in the state during this postseason run as they’ve dominated many of their opponents and have lost only two sets in the playoffs. After taking a regional tournament opening victory against Randolph, Columbus went on to defeat Goliad in the semifinals and a familiar opponent from the district in the regional finals. The Lady Cards claimed the regional championship and punched their ticket to the state semifinal match for the second year in a row which was the first time in the school’s history that a volleyball team has accomplished that feat.
Read moreRevenge is a dish that’s best served cold, so it’s fitting that on one of the coldest nights of the year, the Columbus Cardinals got their get-back on the Lorena Leopards. Last year, the Leopards gave Columbus their worst loss of the season on the way to a state title. This time around, the Cards battled through a defensive first half and a survived a second-half shootout to claim a 24-21 victory over the defending state champions.
Read moreThe varsity girls’ basketball teams are each coming off seasons in which they believe they could’ve performed better. Rice is hoping to improve from their district-worst record last season, Columbus is hoping to redeem their only loss from last season that came in the first round of a short postseason run, and Weimar desires an even deeper playoff run than their third-round appearance last year. Read moreI love the playoffs. I know I’ve said it before but there’s just nothing like postseason play when the stakes are highest and everything is on the line. In just a little over a year of being here in Colorado County, I’ve seen so many crazy playoff performances and games, and every time I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to be able to do so. I do take my job seriously when I’m on the sideline taking pictures and covering these kids as they perform in these big games but I can’t help from being a fan at the same time. Seeing these guys and girls make big plays could get even the most casual fans hyped is huge, but the fact that they do it on the biggest stage against the best opponents just adds another element that proves the greatness of the teams in this county. The rest of this column I want to give a shout out to these teams in the playoffs that are putting on such great performances. Before I start, I want to show love to the teams that didn’t make the postseason this year. Being a student athlete is difficult, and many of these students are in multiple sports as well. Being able to hit the field or hit the court every day and still do everything that’s necessary for school deserves kudos and I definitely don’t want to forget about those students who will not have the opportunity to play in the postseason this year. I’m equally a fan of those teams as well as these teams that I will continue to discuss.
