The Vets win one for Bear, 2-1

The Weimar Vets won a tough battle at Strickland Field against the Flatonia Wildcats 2-1 on Sunday, July 14th. This game was more than a battle for second place in the league standings. This was a win for longtime manager and leader Larry “Bear” Kana, as he recovers from a terrible car accident a little more than a week ago.

The Vets started off the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning when Ryker Goehring scored on a wild pitch after getting on with a single and moving to third on an error by Flatonia earlier in the inning. Flatonia tied the game in the fifth inning after a one out triple and a sacrifice fly led to a run. The Vets would retake the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when Carson Peschel drew a walk, stole 2 bases, and scored on a Flatonia wild pitch. The play of the game came in the top of the eighth with no outs and a runner on second base, when Jeff Osburn made a diving catch on a line drive hit to right center field, robbing Flatonia of extra bases and the tying run. The Vets held on to the 2-1 lead in the ninth for the victory.

It was a true pitchers duel with only five hits allowed by each team. The Vets were led by Matt Sandoval, allowing only one unearned run over six strong innings pitched. He struck out six and only allowed four hits to get the win. Cody Pheffer pitched the final three innings, locking down the save by striking out two and allowing only one hit.
