Living life on the edge

VIEWPOINT OF A TEXAS CHALLENGE ACADEMY CADET

When you come to Texas ChalleNGe Academy, you will learn things about yourself you didn’t even think were possible. You will experience so many things that can and will change you for the better. You will learn discipline and how to overcome challenges within yourself and in the world around you.

As much as I hate how stressful bay life is with girls who are different from me, I am eternally grateful for these experiences. As I’ve told my fellow cadet, Young, I am chronically open-minded. It’s actually kind of a problem for me.

I am steadily focused on other people’s feelings and emotions rather than making sure I am a hundred percent okay myself. Personally, I find it difficult to comprehend how others don’t share that feeling.

For a while I thought it was sad that some of the girls I have lived with for twelve weeks still couldn’t figure out the concept of “Be kind” and “Treat others how you want to be treated.” But my opinions are just that, opinions.

Here, at TCA, my opinions don’t really matter. I just have to go through the cycle and learn how to be open minded to others, their feelings, and situations. We are all different, and that is what I think I have really learned.

For the past week I have allowed other cadets to drain me emotionally and it prevented me from doing my best. I’ve cried and sobbed to cadre, staff and other cadets in my bay saying how much I want to go home but deep down I know that I cannot let go of such an exhilarating challenge.

I am learning. And I will continue to learn. And that may be the best thing I take from here. That I should always learn and grow.
