The Weimar Ladycats defeated the Woodsboro Lady Eagles 8-0 on Friday, April 25, to win the Bi-District Championship.
The Ladycats defense played excellent in the Bi-District round, they shut out the Lady Eagles and were a big factor in helping the Ladycats advance to the next round.
The Ladycats defense was led by their ace pitcher, Taylor Smith, who pitched all seven innings for the Ladycats. She gave up three hits and zero runs, walked zero batters and struck out 10 batters.
Smith threw 95 pitches during Friday’s win and 64 of them were called strikes for a 67% strike rate. Offensively the Ladycats were just as successful and held a 2-0 lead by the end of the first inning.
Tate Griffin got things started with a single in the top of the first inning, shortly after Sam Rangel hit a triple to give the Ladycats a 1-0 lead. Smith then hit a sacrifice fly ball that allowed Rangel to tag up at third base and score the Ladycats second run of the inning.
The Ladycats did not score again until the third inning and again the scoring spree started with a single by Griffin. Shortly after Rangel hit a double to bring Griffin home and that was followed up by a triple by Smith to bring Rangel home.
Olivia Noska came into the game to courtesy run for Smith and shortly after Smith’s triple, Claire Pavlu hit a single to bring Noska home. The Ladycats scored twice in the fifth inning thanks to back-toback base hits from Zariah Sims and Pavlu to drive runners’ home and extend the lead to 7-0.
The Ladycats scored their final run in the top of the sixth inning, Tate Griffin was on base when her sister MJ Griffin hit a double to move Tate to third base. Rangel grounded out on the next at bat, but Tate Griffin was able to score on that play to make the score 8-0.
Rangel and Smith both hit triples during the victory, but Rangel had the hottest bat on the team because she hit two doubles as well. Other Ladycats to hit doubles were Tate Griffin, MJ Griffin and Faith Cantwell.
The Ladycats have the Bi-District Championship in their possession and now look ahead to the Area Round where they will play the winner of La Villa and La Pryor.
