Ladycats win Area Championship

The Weimar Ladycats traveled to Three Rivers High School to take on the La Villa Lady Cardinals in the Area Round of the playoffs on Friday, May 2.

The Ladycats won the game and the Area Championship with a score of 13-0 and it only took them five innings.

The Ladycats started the game on defense as they were the home team for this game. They held La Villa scoreless in the top of the first inning and the Ladycats offense took over the game in the bottom of the first.

It started with back-toback singles by sisters, Tate and MJ Griffin to get two runners on base for the Ladycats. Next up was Sam Rangel and she hit a double to bring both Tate and MJ home for an early 2-0 lead.

With Rangel one second La Villa secured two quick outs to help stop the Ladycats scoring rally. One of those outs though was a sacrifice bunt from Claire Pavlu that advanced Rangel from second to third base and she stole home shortly after for the third run of the inning.

Leading 3-0, the Ladycats defense once again kept La Villa scoreless in the second inning before scoring three more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Tate Griffin again got things started this time with a triple followed up by a single from her sister MJ Griffin to make the score 5-0.

Rangel then hit a triple to bring MJ Griffin home and then shortly after Pavlu hit a single that drove Rangel home. The Ladycats now had a 10-0 lead but were not going to stop there.

In the third inning they scored four more runs thanks to a three-run homerun from Tate Griffin and a solo shot from Rangel. Then in the fourth Zariah Sims hit a triple to drive home a run followed by Ty’Rianna Rhodes who hit a double to bring home another run and then finally Tate Griffin hit a single to drive home the final run of the game.

During all the offensive excitement the Ladycats ace pitcher was having a great game inside the circle. Taylor Smith was back inside the circle for the Ladycats, and she pitched all five innings and gave up on one hit in the entire game.

She also struck out 10 batters during those five innings and what’s even more impressive is that she did not walk a single batter.

The Ladycat shave won the Area Championship and now look ahead to the Regional Semi-Finals where they will take on Burton in a three-game series at Waller High School. Game one is set for Thursday, May 8, at 7 p.m., game two will be Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m. and game three will be played at Waller at 1 p.m. if necessary.
