The Columbus Lady Cardinals won the Area Championship after the defeated the Marion Lady Bulldogs 10-2 on Saturday, May 3.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Seguin High School on Friday, May 2, but bad weather pushed the game back to Saturday and moved the location of the game to Columbus.

The Lady Cards got to enjoy playing on their home field which is rare in playoffs and they took full advantage of it. The game started out scoreless in the first inning but that did not last long as six runs were scored between the two teams in the second inning.

Thankfully, five of those six runs came from the Lady Cards and they carried a 5-1 lead into the third inning.

The Lady Cards extended their lead by four runs in the bottom of the 4th inning where they scored four runs. With a 9-1 lead the Lady Cards gave up one more run in the 5th inning when the Lady Bulldogs scored once more to cut the lead to 9-2.

The Lady Cards scored one more run in the bottom of the 6th inning to get to the final score of 10-2.

Defensively the Lady Cards played a very strong game, they gave up only two runs in the Area Round and only five hits. Mia Post was in the circle for the Lady Cards and she pitched all seven innings.

Post gave up two runs on five hits while walking two batters and striking out three of them. She did not give up a ton of hits in the game but whenever she did the defense behind her did an excellent job of making the plays to secure an out.

Offensively, the Lady Cards bats stayed hot in the Area Round of the playoffs as they hit several doubles. Abigail Wiggs led the way for the Lady Cards as she hit two doubles during the win.

Ella Berger, Ellie Brown and Molly Garcia each hit one double during the win and combined for six of the 10 total RBIs the Lady Cards had. Brown led the team with three RBIs, Garcia and Post each recorded two RBIs.

The Lady Cards now set their sights on round three where they will play another three-game series against Orange Grove. Game one is scheduled for Friday, May 9, at 6 p.m., game two is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, at 1 p.m. with game three set for 30 minutes after game two if necessary.

All three games will be played at Marion High school as the Lady Cards look to advance past the Regional Semi-Final round.
