ESD fails to pass

New place 5 Weimar city councilman elected

The unofficial election results for Colorado County are in after the conclusion of the 2025 general election on Saturday, May 3, with a newcomer appointed to the Weimar city council and Eagle Lake being the only municipality in the county to approve the Emergency Services District (ESD).

Following former Place 5 councilman Roy Ulrich opting to not file for re-election, Ronell Wilson and Stephen Helmcamp went toe to toe for the position on Weimar’s city council, with Wilson ultimately beating out Helmcamp 106-99, separated by only seven votes.

Eagle Lake’s city council race saw an open contest between incumbents Jim Wood, Rene’ Cooper and Chris D. Parker and hopeful candidate Randy Turner, who barely missed out on snatching a city council position away from Parker, with the two separated by only four votes (70-66). Wood received 122 votes and Cooper received 111 votes.

Rice CISD secretary Bridget Belman is going nowhere following Saturday’s results, beating out Anthony Johnson vying to take her position, by nearly double the votes, securing another term as secretary by a margin of 314-173 votes.

Belman won the majority vote in every eligible precinct except the Alleyton and Columbus/ Glidden precincts.

The Colorado County Emergency Services District was perhaps the most contested item on the bill across the county, with opinions mixed as election day neared. The ESD has not passed county wide, with nearly triple the votes going against the ESD rather than in favor (292-827).

Nearly 1,900 votes were cast across the county, with Columbus and their ETJ voting against the ESD 144-157 and Weimar and their ETJ voting against the ESD 95-119.

Garwood/Nada saw the biggest discrepancy in ESD voting with nearly 97% of voters voting against the proposition, 138-5.

Eagle Lake however was the only municipality, alongside its extraterritorial jurisdiction, to vote in favor of the ESD, 137-97 (both city and ETJ votes). Despite the majority vote city and ETJ wide, due to the overall county vote being against the creation of the ESD, the resolution did not pass.
