A well-loved local physician officially hung up the stethoscope after a 48-year long career, celebrating his retirement party at the Columbus Wellness Center on Friday, May 9.

Dr. Thomas E. Mueller was embraced by loved ones, family, friends, coworkers and patients as they celebrated his stellar and fulfilling career, the final half of which was spent at the Columbus Community Hospital.

Mueller was named the TAFP’S 20112012 Texas Family Physician of the Year, gracing the cover of the magazine telling his story.

After 24 years of providing high quality care to not only Columbus residents but those in need across the county and beyond, Mueller decided the time was right to bring his career to a conclusion, a decision which Mueller says was not easy in the slightest.

“It is very bittersweet,” said Mueller. “I’m going to miss taking care of all of my patients after all these years, the staff and those I got to spend time with on a daily basis.”

Mueller says he plans to focus his time now on being with family and his favorite pastime, traveling, noting how one of his favorite destinations are the cold waters of Alaska, where he and his family have a cabin and regularly frequent.

“We went on a cruise a while back and we just fell in love with the place,” said Mueller. “I love to travel all over the world, but Alaska has a special place in my heart.”
