As another Memorial Day looms closer, we remember and honor those who have died serving our nation in its darkest hours.
Originating after the first national observance in 1868 following the American Civil War, the name was changed to “Memorial Day” after World War I and was officially declared a national holiday in 1971.
Here are two Memorial Day celebrations that may be taking place near you.
Columbus VVA Chapter 1127 invites community members to Memorial Day Ceremony
The Columbus Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1127 invites the community to a ceremony honoring Memorial Day.
It will be held at the Columbus City Veterans Memorial Park located at 100 Veterans Drive in Columbus on Monday, May 26, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Attendees will be served complimentary burgers or hot dogs, while they last, provided by Feed the Need Missions, from noon until 1:00 p.m.
Donations are welcomed. The program will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. and include patriotic music, comments by local leaders and reflections of several combat veterans expressing the meaning of Memorial Day to them.
Sealy Memorial Day Ceremony The Sealy American Legion Post 422 will be hosting a ceremony honoring those lost and those who have lost loved ones on Memorial Day.
The event will be held at the Sealy American Legion Hall located on 1630 Meyer St., and take place at 11 a.m.
There will be a wreath laying and rifle salute, with guest speaker Bradley Stavinoha, the Texas 9th District Legion Commander set to make an address.

Cookies and sandwiches will be served to attendees after the commencement of the ceremony.
