50 YEARS AGO

Farm Bureau Annual Queen Contests Slated Colorado County Farm Bureau’s annual queen contest will be held 8 p.m. Friday, June 27, at the Eagle Lake Community Center. Chuck Shwartzkopf will be master of ceremonies.

Daughters or sisters of Colorado County Farm Bureau members, single and between 16 and 22 as of Sept 1., 1975, are eligible to enter. Entries are judged on poise, personality and appearance. Deadline for entry is 5 p.m. Friday, June 13.

Soldier Is Injured In Headon Wreck Doyle W. Johnson, 17, of Baton Rouge, La., was seriously injured when the car he was driving slammed almost headon into a semi-trailer truck.

The accident occurred on S.H. 71 a block south of the North River Bridge.

Johnson, a soldier in the arm stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas, was taken to Columbus Hospital and later transferred by Army helicopter to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

75 YEARS AGO

Little Nada Girl is 2nd Polio Case of County Colorado County’s 2nd polio case has appeared in the Nada area. Catherine Gerbermann is reported doing well in Jeff Davis Hospital in Houston where she was taken last week.

The little girl, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Alvin Gerbermann, was reported to have had a heart attack similar to that of Catherine Krenek who was admitted at Jeff Davis May 8.

State Legislative Candidate Gives His Background Franz W. Zedske, editor and publisher of the Bellville Times of Bellville, this week authorized the Citizen to announce his candidacy for the office of state representative of the 25th District subject to the Democratic primary July 22.

Mr. Zedske was born in Belville in 1908. He has been nominated with the Bellville Times since 1935 and has been editor and publisher since 1937.

100 YEARS AGO

Texas Tick Fever Again Reported

Twenty two dead cattle is the toll taken by Texas Tick Fever in the herd of Chumney & Lengerke, near Eagle Lake, last week.

Dr. W. L. Endsley made an examination of the infected animals and pronounced it genuine Texas Fever.

The cattle are being dipped for ticks but it is impossible to administer any treatment to the affected animals other than cleaning them of the tick and prevent the spread of the disease.

Colored School Closes

The Columbus Colored School closed with appropriate exercises last Monday night, eight girls and one boy graduating.

Prof. D. Haven of Caldwell delivered the class address.

Mr. L.S. Lawrence presented the diplomas and Supt. J.H. Wooten delivered an address.

125 YEARS AGO

The German Emperor.

The German emperor, unless all signs fail, will not be a disaster of European power. He is his own master, and is not under the influence of ambitious soldiers, many of whom would gladly accept using a slight provocation as a reason for a war with Russia, France or England.

Lafayette Dollars.

Congress decided to take a survey, what indirect way of helping the project to erect a monument to Lafayette in Paris, as a gift of the American people, instead of paying a sum of money to the government.
