On April 28, 118 CISD 6th grade students were able to go on a field trip to NASA Space Center Houston. This was made possible through the Classroom Grant program instituted as part of the Columbus Education Foundation’s support of CISD. This was the second year in a row for the 6th graders to go to NASA on a classroom grant.
The student’s teacher, Amanda Oppermann had this to say about the NASA trip, “Our students loved the opportunity to visit the world’s leading science and human space exploration learning center. At the exhibits students could read facts, explore artifacts and spacesuits, learn what it takes to travel to mars, actually touch a piece of mars and the moon, learn how astronauts eat, sleep and live in zero gravity, complete hands on experiments at the science deck, visit the international space station gallery and watch film of space documentaries.”
The students had the opportunity to visit the Astronaut Training facility where astronauts train for their next missions and is where developing space exploration vehicles are being developed.
The last stop on the field trip was at Rocket Park. Students were able to see up-close and personal the spacecrafts, including the massive Saturn V which was primarily used to take astronauts to the moon.
According to Oppermann, “This was an amazing experience for our students and it has them eager to learn more and want to go back.”
Through the contribution of our many donors, Columbus Education Foundation has experienced tremendous growth in the funds to expand our Classroom Grant Program.
This gives the opportunity for the teachers of CISD the chance for their students to experience new opportunities; it helps to broaden their educational experience.
The Columbus Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation dedicated to enhance the education of CISD students. CEF seeks and accepts contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations to support these endeavors.
More information can be found at www.ColumbusEducationFoundation. org. The Board of CEF would like to give thanks to our many donors and would encourage others to consider contributing to our mission of helping to provide that little extra for the education of CISD students. We look forward to continuing our growth to benefit the education of CISD students in 2025 and beyond.
