Columbus High School came in 4th place in the Lone Star Cup standings with a total of 45 points.

The Lone Star Cup is an award given out to schools to recognize their overall team achievements in athletics, academics and musical championships.

Looking at athletics, the Columbus Cardinals and Lady Cardinals had themselves quite the 2025 season. Volleyball had a deep playoff run in the fall and then shortly after the football team ended up winning the school’s first ever state championship.

Shortly after that the Cardinals basketball team ends up making it to the State Championship game. Then the Lady Cardinals softball team made a run all the way to the Reginal Finals.

In addition to that the track team also made it to the Regional Meet and then the tennis and the golf teams both went to the State Tournament. So, it was a very eventful season for athletics at Columbus High School.

But this cup includes more than athletics so let’s look at the academic side of this for Columbus. Let’s start with the fact that athletics and academics worked together this year for Columbus because more than half the rosters across all sports were named to the Academic All-District teams.

On top of that, the class of 2025, the class that graduated last week, received $2.5 million in scholarships. These kids earned everything they won in sports but behind the scenes they were working even harder in the classroom and helped boost Columbus in the standings for the Lone Star Cup.

Those scholarships saw several kids commit to big name schools like Texas Chirstian University, Sam Houston State University, Arizona State University and West Virginia University just to name a few. While it seems as though just athletic and academic scholarships were handed out, but the band also made some splashes this season.

The musical aspect of this trophy tends to go unnoticed, but this time they won’t. The Columbus band was a big part of the school year this year on several different occasions.

Anytime Columbus sent a team to State they were paraded through the halls at school while the band filled the halls with lively music. They helped breath a little bit of life or pomp and circumstance to really emphasize whatever accomplishment their fellow classmates achieved.

On top of that they had a truly great show this year for football season and picked up a couple of awards for their effort. They even joined in on the fun and had a few band members sign some scholarships to continue their love of music in college.

It was a great year for Columbus and next year they will look to bounce back and finish even higher than 4th place.
