AAA Texas: gas prices drop as summer driving season shifts to high gear

The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.75 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is four cents less when compared to this day last week and is 38 cents less per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $2.93 per gallon while drivers in the Corpus Christi area are paying the least at $2.56 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.17, which is two cents less when compared to this day last week and 40 cents less per gallon when compared to this day last year.

With crude oil prices steady in the low $60s per barrel, drivers are seeing lower prices at the pump heading into the summer months. Gas prices are expected to remain below last year’s levels, but the Atlantic hurricane season is a wild card. NOAA predicts a 60% chance of an above-normal season, and if any storms develop along the Gulf Coast, they could disrupt refinery operations and fuel deliveries—causing temporary price spikes.

“Drivers can expect gas prices to remain lower this summer compared to last year—barring a major storm system that impacts oil and gas operations along the Gulf Coast,” said Daniel Armbruster, AAA Texas spokesperson. “Crude oil prices have held steady, helping keep pump prices down even as demand rises. Crude oil is the main ingredient in gasoline and makes up approximately 50 percent of the cost of each gallon of fuel.”
