The Columbus 7u All-Star baseball team traveled to Hempstead to compete in the first tournament of the season.

It was a tough outing for Columbus as the baseball team posted a 1-4 record while at the tournament.

@ Sealy, L, 15-9

Starting the tournament Columbus found themselves up against Sealy for their first game. Columbus came strong by scoring five runs in the top of the first inning, but Sealy responded right back with five runs in the bottom of the first to tie up the game.

Columbus then retook the lead in the top of the second by scoring one run and with a 6-5 lead they took the field. Sealy continued to have good production from the batter’s box and scored five more runs to make it a 10-6 ball game.

Columbus scored once more in the third inning before Sealy scored five more runs to make the score 15-7. Columbus scored twice in the top of the fifth inning, but Sealy was able to secure three outs shortly after and end the game.

Columbus knew they could bounce back and get back in the win column, so they quickly put this game int he rearview mirror and looked ahead to game two.

@ Washington County (Green), L, 10-2 In game two it seemed as though the offense for Columbus was stuck in a rut and despite what the score shows this team was one swing away from getting back into this game.

Columbus scored one run on each of the first and second inning, and that was the only offense they would see for the game. Washington County scored two runs in the first, three in the second and five in the third to put the game out of reach.

It’s a tough reality to be sitting at 0-2 so Columbus came back in game three and showed just how good they are.

Vs. Washington County (White), L, 11-8 Columbus’ offense came back to life in gam three and came out swinging. They scored three runs in the first, one in the second, four in the third and three in the fourth for a total of 11 runs. Defensively they gave up four runs in the first, one in the second, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Grant Langhamer, Nash Schindler, Wesley Ratley and Cross Kulhanek all recorded a double in the win while Andrew Jurica hit two doubles. In addition to that, Lawson Weland and Cross Kulhanek recorded triples during the game. Kulhanek also led the game with three RBIs.

This was their first win of the tournament, and they were looking to snatch up another win before the tournament ended. @ Sealy, L, 19-9

In their second match up with Sealy Columbus came out hot again and scored four runs in the first inning. Sealy responded with five runs in the bottom of the first though and never coughed up the lead after that.

Sealy went on to score five in the second, four in the third, and five in the fourth. Columbus scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning, but Sealy’s offense could not be stopped.

Andrew Jurica, Nash Schindler and Wesley Ratley all hit doubles during the game, and Oliver Wegenhoft hit the only triple for Columbus.

With one game left Columbus looked to win one more game to end their season on a high note.

@ Bellville, L, 13-3

In their final game Bellville scored five runs in the first, four in the second and two in the third and fourth inning for a total of 13. Columbus scored three runs in the fourth inning for a final score of 13-3.

So, look, it’s never fun to be on the losing side of things and these kids should not be chastised for losing. It’s a game at the end of the day and the most important thing is that every kid gets a chance to get out on the field and have some fun with their friends.

That is the only thing that matters at this age, and these kids are living life to the fullest right now. It may not have been the outcome they wanted, but they learned so much about themselves and the team that they will come back and be even better next year.
