The Columbus Little League 7u All-Star softball team traveled to Burton to compete in the first tournament of the season.

They finished with a 3-3 record but found themselves playing for the championship by the end of the tournament. They came up just short against Sealy but still received some rings for their efforts.

They started off the tournament with a very impressive 13-9 victory over Burleson County. Columbus’ bats showed up in a big way in game one, with Cami Loessin, Danica Fuentez, Jade Nelson and Saige Loessin all hitting doubles on their way to a win.

In game two Columbus matched up with Sealy to give fans a preview of the championship game, and it was a very tight game. The final score was 13-12 in favor of Sealy as they walked off the victory in the bottom of the 4th inning when they scored one run to break a 12-12 tie.

Columbus then came into game three looking to get back in the win column, and they did exactly that. They defeated Washington County by a score of 18-14 to pick up their second win of the tournament.

Once again Columbus’ bats were hot as Cami Loessin, Bristol Kotrla, Demi Stevens, Issa Jackson, Jade Nelson, Leddi Luedecke and Saige Loessin all hit doubles during the game. Lena Peikert joined in on the offensive fun as she hit not one but two triples while her teammate Issa Jackson hit the only home run of the game.

Game four saw Columbus run into Sealy again, and the result of this game was the same as the first, a one run ball game, but the final score of this one was 12-11. Going into the 4th inning Columbus held an 11-8 lead over Sealy.

Columbus was unable to extend their lead over Sealy in the top of the 4th and Sealy came back in the bottom of the 4th to score four runs and walk the game off yet again.

Onto game five now and Columbus found themselves matched up with Burleson County once more in this tournament. They defeated Burleson County by a score of 14-6 thanks to the offense continuing to show up in a big way.

Cami Loessin, Danica Fuentez and Issa Jackson all recorded doubles during the game and Jackson hit her second home run of the tournament. The victory set up one last showdown with Sealy where Columbus looked to finally beat them.

In their third game against each other at the tournament Sealy defeated Columbus for a third time by a score of 14-8 to win the championship. Columbus’ offense played another strong game, but Sealy’s defense came ready to play that game and stopped Columbus at eight runs which allowed Sealy’s offense to take over the game.

It was an exciting season for the 7u All-Stars and showcased just how much talent the Columbus Little League has and gave fans a glimpse of what they will see at the high school level in the future.
