As we all know by now the Columbus Cardinals won the UIL Class 3A State Championship in football this season.
What some may not know is just how much this football team accomplished so much this season as almost every player experienced some level of success this season.
This is also a little bit of a reminder to fans of what happened this season because it all happened so fast. It was like we were at the State Championship game then we blinked and now we are in June.
So, let’s jump right on in and talk football first as they made history winning their first ever State Championship.
I mean just look at the roster and automatically one of the reasons why they won the State Title is evident. This team was absolutely loaded with talent. So much so that all of their key players this season all signed to big name Division 1 colleges.
Camdon Pitchford was a receiver for this team, and he finished the year with 1,206 yards and 21 touchdowns and signed to play football at West Virginia. Grayson Rigdon, who was the featured running back for the Cardinals, he finished the year with 2,051 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns and signed to play football at Arizona State University.
Not to mention that Rigdon won the State Championship in football in all four years he was in high school, which is another huge accomplishment.
Anthony Shorter was a defensive end for the Cardinals and got hurt in week one of the season. Despite this Sam Houston State liked his game tape so much that he was given an offer anyway despite not playing his senior season and will continue his career at the college level.
Next was the two Cardinals that are heading to Texas Christian University and to add a fun twist they also have the same last name. Yes, Adam and John Schobel’s legacy at Columbus High School cannot go unmentioned.
They were both fouryear starters for the Cardinals and helped lead the team to a 49-7 record during their time here. The duo was named the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Game during the State Championship, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
John was also named the Defensive Player of the Year in his senior season at Columbus, where he racked up 196 tackles and 12 sacks. Adam was selected as Dave Campbell’s Mr. Texas High School Football for his efforts and ended his career as a Cardinal with 11,196 passing yards and 149 touchdowns.
It was a very exciting year capped off by a State Championship; the Cards know what it takes to win a State Championship and will be chomping at the bit to get back there next season.
