The Columbus Minor All-Star baseball team came in third place with a record of 4-3 at a recent tournament.
Columbus started the tournament strong with back-to-back wins over Sealy and Bellville.
In game one Columbus took on Sealy and they picked up their first win of the tournament with an 11-1 victory over Sealy. Columbus scored one run in the first and second inning, two runs in the third, five in the fourth, and two more in the fifth.
Columbus gave up one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to reach the final score of 11-1. Miles Pflughaupt and Brooks Schindler shared responsibilities on the bump for Columbus as they pitched all five innings and struck out nine batters.
In game two against Bellville Columbus trailed 3-1 heading into the sixth inning and Columbus came storming back with four runs in the sixth to win the game. Landyn Rooks and Easton Leopold were on the bump, and they pitched all six innings and struck out six batters.
In game three Columbus was handed their first loss of the tournament when they were defeated 10-5 by Hempstead. This was their first loss, but Columbus never panicked, and they bounced back with back-to-back wins.
Columbus took on Twin Cities, and it was a very competitive game that ended with an 8-7 final score in favor of Columbus. Twin Cities opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning where they scored three runs.
Columbus scored three runs in the top of the fourth in response, but Twin Cities scored three more runs to bring the game to a 6-3 score. Columbus scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning and then once more in the second while giving up one run to Twin Cities to win the game 8-7.
Columbus then faced Bellville for a second time and the result was the same as Columbus came away with the victory with a score of 9-6.
In their final two games Columbus lost to Grimes and Washington County where Columbus lost both by scores of 5-0 and 16-10 to come in 3rd place at the tournament.
It was a tough ending to the season and not the outcome they wanted, but they will be back next season looking to come home with gold instead of bronze.
