Wildcats’ new identity starting to take place

As we move deeper into July the start of football season begins to appear on the horizon.

While two of the three teams in Colorado County will more or less have the same set of systems that they have been running, one team, the Weimar Wildcats, may look different to start the year.

For those who may not know, the Wildcats recently hired Dylan Conway as their new Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. Now, this opens up several opportunities for the Wildcats to kind of rebrand themselves as a football team.

Not meaning changing their actual identity because it’s hard to beat the beautiful alliteration of Weimar Wildcats. But they have an opportunity to change their football identity as to what type of team they want to be.

Under Wade Griffin the Wildcats were run heavy and operated out of the veer offensive system. It was successful, and the Wildcats made several playoff runs with Griffin at the helm.

But Conway may want to come in a tinker with the systems a bit and fit them to the scheme that he wants. While Griffin loved running the football, Conway may find the passing game to be the most effective way to move the ball down the field.

Then again, he may not, and Conway could potentially come in and think the veer is perfect and just keeps running that system. While this talks mostly about the offensive side of the ball as well because as most football fans know, defense wins championships and for a team looking to win a State Championship they may look to change a few things defensively, then again, he may not.

On top of that, the Wildcats lost a few productive seniors in key offensive roles. So, Conway will have to take that into account because that will also shift the perspective of this offense and what they are able to do within the offense with the personnel they have.

So, changes are coming, how big or small remains to be seen either way it sets the stage for an exciting season of Wildcat football.
