Lady Cards volleyball ready to soar

Lady Cards volleyball ready to soar
Harper Gerik will be returning to the Columbus Lady Cardinals for her sophomore season.

As we move deeper into July, the start of the Columbus Lady Cards volleyball season gets closer and closer.

Last season, the Lady Cards sported an impressive 38-9 overall record and a perfect 14-0 district record.

The won the District Championship and stormed all the way through the playoffs to the Regional Finals. They were eliminated in the Regional Finals by Goliad and ended their season a little earlier than they would have wanted.

The interesting part of that was that a lot of people had the Lady Cards regressing especially after losing the likes of Ally Tribe and Sage Thomas. But they proved those people wrong by putting together a season where they only lost nine games.

This season they are losing two more very productive seniors in Taylor Morrow and Abigail Fisher. Their presences on the court will be missed, but the Lady Cards will still have a ton of talent in returning players this season.

Caylie Neisner, Gracie Schobel, Mary Fitzgerald, Logan Glueck, Kyndal Kuhn, Madisan Glueck, Riley Kainer, Harper Gerik and Emma Calhoun are all expected to return to the Lady Cards next season.

Neisner, Schobel, Kuhn and Calhoun will make up the senior group returnig and head coach Kaylee Johns will be leaning on them heavily to lead this team. Especially Neisner and Schobel because they have been a part of the team for so long and know what the standard is.

One thing to keep an eye on this season for the Lady Cards is their milestones as there are several players who can put their names in the record books this season. Neisner recorded her 1,000th dig in tournament play last season and who’s to say she won’t finish with 1,200 or 1,300 to cap off her senior year.

There are plenty of others looking to make history at Columbus High School on the volleyball court, so fans keep a close eye on this team. If you blink, you may miss a piece of history.

The Lady Cards are scheduled to start their season on Tuesday, August 26, when they take on another Colorado County school, the Weimar Ladycats.
