Thief strikes at Windham’s
A sledgehammer wielding thief broke into Windham’s Jewelry Store early Tuesday morning and got away with a still undermined amount of jewelry. The thief used a brandnew sledgehammer to break the front display window to get into the store and smashed the glass on three display cases once inside.
S.H. 71 red tape cut; route ok’d The Federal Highway Administration has approved the proposed design of S.H. 71 from the Fayette-Colorado County line to I-10 west of Columbus.
This approval, according to Clarence A. Weise, local resident engineer for the State Department of Highways and public Transporation, clears the way for the next phase of engineering on this project.

Lee Roy Kovar, 25, drowning victim near Ellinger Lee Roy Kovar, 25, of Ellinger and Columbus, became the second victim of the Colorado river within recent weeks Monday night.
He drowned about four miles from Ellinger while on a fishing trip and his body was recovered Tuesday morning.
Cattle thefts get to be too much, advertiser says R. Lee Hastedt is getting tired of cattle rustlers’ depredations on his herd, he states in a classified advertisement in this issue of The CItizen.
“You got one of my cows in the fall of 1948, two cows in the spring of 1949, a fat cow within the past 60 days and a fat cow within the past two days,” Mr. Hastedt recounts. “I believe that should be my share for at least the next two years.”

Pythians enjoy big barbecue Monday The local lodge Knights of Pythias enjoyed a big barbecue at the J.E. Hester farm, two miles south of this city, Tuesday night. Some 150 people did ample justice to calf and mutton barbecue which was pronounced as fine as any of the guests had ever tasted.
