County to talk big rig ban

The Colorado County Commissioners Court announced a public hearing on Monday, Aug. 11, at 9 a.m. on establishing a No Thru Truck Zone in Alleyton during their meeting, Monday, July 28.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Darrell Gertson proposed the zone in relation to the closure of FM 102 and its detour through the city. The zone would run on Old Alleyton Road and begin at the intersection of FM 102 to the Interstate 10 feeder road. Gertson cited the upcoming start of the school year for his reasoning.

“With the school buses fixing to start and kids on the side of the road, we don’t need any kids falling,” Gertson said.

Alleyton belongs to the Columbus Independent School District which starts its fall semester on Wednesday, Aug. 13. Gerston said despite being a turnaround for the closure, the path of least resistance runs through the city. The zone would prohibit large trucks from traveling through the city, forcing them to utilize the turnaround.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Keith Neuendorff seconded the motion to schedule the hearing. The court unanimously approved the motion. Judge Ty Prause said that the court would publish notice of the hearing.
