The Columbus Lady Cardinals held their first practice of the season last Friday to help add to the excitement of the upcoming season.
Coming into this practice the Lady Cards have the benefit of having a coach that has been there for years.
Lady Cards Head Coach Kaylee Johns is back for another season as the bench boss for the Lady Cards volleyball team. So day one it’s pretty known what is expected from the players especially the upperclassmen.
They know coach Johns loves to have fun but also know that she expects them to show up and work in practice. The upperclassmen know this and the girls that have been playing for Johns for a while know how to lead the fresh faces to meet Johns’ expectations.
Now that sounds like Johns is running a tight ship over at Columbus and she is because she knows what it takes to win. But she also does a great job of keeping things light at practice with plenty of friendly competitions and games to make sure the girls are coming together as a team early in the season.
At practice the girls did a lot of drills working on just basic fundamentals such as serving, digs and bumps. Nothing too crazy to start the year but it’s a chance for the girls to knock some of that summer rust off and get ready for the first game.
Each girl at practice was sweating their tails off while also smiling like Heath Ledger’s Joker. It was a great sight to see because these girls are just as excited to get the season started and this practice only inches us all closer to the start of the sports year.
The Lady Cards will continue to work hard in practice as they will begin to work on their systems, they will use this season in the coming weeks as they prepare for tournament play.
