As we move into August, week one of football season creeps closer and closer and the defending class 3A Division I state champions are preparing to defend their title.
That’s right this week the Columbus Cardinals were back on the football field working on a few fundamental things to help knock off the summer rust.
The Cards did not have pads on for their first couple of practices but that’s a benefit for both the players and the coaches. While the players are not wearing pads or taking “live reps” per say they are still a ton of benefits to these practices.
The first being that they are high tempo practices, constantly moving around the field for different drills and coaches are making sure each kid is not walking to the next drill. So from freshman to seniors they are getting some conditioning at these practices.
Every athlete knows that conditioning is the worst thing imaginable but the fact that these kids are suffering through all the heat and running together is only bringing them closer.
Another benefit is that they get to slow things down a ton and really emphasize what exactly everyone is supposed to be doing on certain plays. While they are doing that, not having pads on also lessens the chance of injury which is one of the main priorities of the coaches this early in the season.
Slowing things down benefits the players becasue again, just like the high tempo nature of the practies, it allows the freshman and the seniors to all get on the same page before the season starts.
While we still have a few more weeks until the Cards kickoff against Cuero in week one, but during those weeks they will be hard at work to make sure they are fully prepared for game one on, Friday, Aug. 29.
