Suspect says, ‘Yes, I did it’ Chief of Police Ed Potter said Tuesday that one of the suspects in the Windham Jewelry Store burglary had admitted the whole thing.
Potter said Sam Henry Hubert, 27, of Houston, signed a statement admitting the burglary after he was confronted with a lie detector in Wharton.
1288 enrolled in city schools The enrollment in Columbus schools totaled 1,288 on opening day, it was announced this week.
The total was down about three percent from a year ago and continues a steady decline in enrollment that has prevailed during the past several years.

209 from three counties get preinduction exams by Sept. 5
A total of 209 men fro Colorado, Fayette and Austin counties will have received pre-induction tests by Sept. 5 but there may not be another such call until October, according to information from the draft board headquarters at La Grange.
County schools to have health program in Fall Mrs. Grace Towell, the county’s new health nurse, has plans for establishing a health program in county schools and has ideas on other health programs to be discussed with county health officials soon.

Columbus theatre being remodeled Patrons of the Columbus Theatre will probably not know the place when they return to the next performance, which will be shown on Saturday night of this week after having been closed for about two weeks. A complete equipment of new seats is being installed and the entire interior remodeled and renewed.
Prominent citizen passes Monday Mr. Henry Hastedt, a prominent educator of this section, died at his home in this city at 6:20 o’clock last Monday, after an illness of some three months. The last 10 weeks of which was confined to his bed. He was 57 years of age.
