Officials ban through trucks on Old Alleyton

COLORADO COUNTY

The Colorado County Commissioners Court on Monday, Aug. 11, established a no truck through area on Old Alleyton Road from FM 102 to the I-10 feeder due to concerns over safety.

The Old Alleyton Road has been a frequent path for many of the trucks carrying various materials for the ongoing I-10 road work as the path is the quickest between the gravel pits and I-10. The constant traffic of the large trucks has left many locals worried, as Michel Fisher, a concerned local, would point out.

“It’s a safety thing,” Fisher said.

Fisher said that many of the trucks would speed past drivers already doing the speed limit. He would further point out that the wide turns the trucks make, forced the trucks through the middle of the road, which has resulted in other drivers having been forced to move out of the way. It is not just one or two trucks either as another citizen, Marilyn Wade, would point out the amount she had seen in a single day.

“Right in front of our house and I had about 20 or 30,” Wade said.

These concerns were made worse due to many children being present along this strip of road, as it is also a route for the local school buses. Due to these worries Precinct 4 Commissioner Darrell Gertson, would confirm he had already spoken with the truckers’ company to try and stop their use of Old Alleyton Road.

“They can recommend them do it, but they cant make them do it,” Darrell Gertson said.

While these talks did reduced the number of truckers, it did not stop them all together. As such the Commissioner Court looked to take legal action in order to stop any further trucks from coming through. With Precinct 4 Commissioner Darrell Gertson proposing a sign to designate the strip as off limit to truckers.

“The only way we can do this, is to put a no through truck [sign],” Darrell Gertson said.

The court would go on to unanimously support the idea and pass it. This would allow the local sheriffs department to enforce the new restrictions.

“One or two get popped and word will spread quickly,” Gertson said.

The new restriction would be placed in the near future. County officials said residents along Old Alleyton Road should expect the trucks coming through to stop within the coming weeks once this takes effect.
