The Weimar Ladycats competed in the Columbus Vol leybal l Classic where they learned to battle through adversity during games.
The Ladycats matched up with St. John XXIII in their first game and the Ladycats defeated them in two sets.
The Ladycats won both sets to win the match but there were a few lapses in their game that were to be expected. This was only their second game of the year, so it makes sense that there are a few things to clean up, but their coach thinks they are close to returning to form.
“We did well, we do have three sophomores and one freshman on the court, so we are trying to get them to lead along with the upperclassmen,” Ladycats Head Coach Amanda Machicek said. “So, we are still working a few kinks out but, in a few weeks, we should be good to go.”
One of the positive take aways from the game was the fact that in both sets during the match the Ladycats trai led at some point during the set. If it was by a little or by a lot the Ladycats were down on the scoreboard and found a way to win both of them.
Some teams start to trail on the scoreboard, and they give up and allow the other team to run away with the set. Machicek, however, was constantly preaching to her team to find a way through the adversity and they did.
Machicek said that this is very encouraging to see her as a coach this early in the season because it makes her team better.
“Our motto this season is ‘Be better’ so that is what we try to do each and every point,” Machicek said. “I always tell them ‘If you can be 1% better each day then by the end of the season you will be ready to play at 110% when we need you most.’” The Ladycats will continue to work each day in practice and get 1% better each day as they look to stack up wins in tournament play.
