The Columbus Cardinals are gearing up for the 2025 season and with that comes a couple of scrimmage games before the season starts.
A scrimmage for the High School teams is similar to pre-season game for NFL teams as it allows teams to get a better understanding of what they have from a talent standpoint and a glimpse of what their identity may be.
Score is not necessarily kept during scrimmages, rather teams are working in their playbooks. In addition to that they are also working on communication in a game setting.
Making sure every player knows what each audible call means along with any other jargon the team may use on the field during the season. Another benefit of a scrimmage is players get to work on plays in the playbook during a scrimmage and start to carve out their role on either the offensive or defensive side.
See, in football on any play there are a lot of moving pieces, receivers, tight ends may have to run a route or block, while running backs are doing one of those two things or receiving a hand off for a run. Offensive linemen may have to pull and get on the outside and throw a block to open up a lane for the running back.
Then on defense there is just as many moving pieces that require constant communication. These scrimmages help the kids both understand the jargon on the field in case things need to be changed and also help them know what their assignments are in certain plays.
Now, the easy thought is, why are they not going over that in practice and the easy answer is they are but playing in a game is a different animal compared to practice. That is why scrimmages are so important, especially for a team looking to defend their UIL Class 3A Division I State Championship.
This will not be the only scrimmage the Cardinals will participate in as they are set to travel to Sealy to take on the Sealy Tigers in their last scrimmage before Week 1 kicks off.
