The Columbus Lady Cardinals traveled to Schulenburg to compete in their second tournament of the year.
The Lady Cards found themselves matched up with Sacred Heart and they had a bit of an uncharacter istic set in the first set but quickly bounced back.
The first set ended in the Lady Cards favor by a score of 25-19 but and it was as close as the score reflects. The Lady Cards had a couple of miscues in the first set as there were some timing issues on plays and a couple of missed assignments defensively.
The Lady Cards got out of the set and before the second set started Lady Cards head coach, Kayley Johns, talked to her team and got them back on track.
“We talk about being a consistent and dominate team a lot and if we want to be dominate, we have to play up to our level and get over mistakes fast,” Johns said. “We can’t slow down the game and we have to finish points earlier and I think we did that in the second set.”
Not only did the Lady Cards finish points early int he second set but they also played some very strong defense. They held Sacred Heart to only seven points in the second set and the Lady Cardinals came away with a 25-7 win.
Johns is a fair coach but has high standards for her team and when they are not meeting those standards, she is not scared to let her team know. Sure, it’s some tough love but Johns said they bounced back in the second set as expected.
“That’s what they are expected to do. For us to be successful as we want to be then that’s how we have to play,” Johns said. “We have been telling them this whole time that they are capable of doing it. If we speed up our game and put balls down earlier like we are supposed to, we will achieve that success.”
The Lady Cards currently have a 13-2 record for the season so far and will look to continue their winning ways and chase down success when they take on the Weimar Ladycats on Tuesday, August 26, in Weimar.
