Officials anticipate police chief hire, OK temporary stop signs

WEIMAR CITY COUNCIL

WEIMAR — Weimar City Council gathered to discuss the hiring of a police chief, the installation of stop signs at North West Street and more during a meeting, Thursday, Aug. 21.

Staff and council

During the meeting, the council held a private, executive session to revise and expand the residency requirements for the vacant police chief position.

“We are still reviewing candidates, and there’s expected to be a job offer today,” City Manager Don Dixson said on Friday, Aug. 22.

The council also administered the oath of office to its newest councilmember Rex Kloesel, who had previously served on the council until 2019. Mayor Carlton Tucker, who was recently appointed to his position after former Mayor Milton Koller unexpectedly retired, said having a full staff for a meeting was nice.

“We’ve been operating one councilperson short, so it was nice to have our councilman sworn in. He seems excited to be back in place,” Tucker said. “I’m adjusting to moving from a councilperson position to the mayor. It’s certainly an honor, and I’m looking forward to serving the citizens of Weimar.”

Stop signs and water lines The council voted to install temporary stop signs at North West Street at Converse/Sedan Road and at Grange Street, near Weimar Junior High School. Currently, the roads feature yield signs but face high traffic in the mornings and afternoons.

“It’s kind of a ‘Let’s see how this works.’ Does it function as we hope it will and provide a safer environment for the parents and the children as they’re traversing trying to get in and out of the junior high area?” Tucker said.

The council also heard a proposal from BEFCO Engineering on the process of replacing the old water lines with PVC. Dixson said the council wanted him to continue discussions with BEFCO Engineering and Strand Engineering.

“One proposal from one engineer was for the whole city all at once. It recommended digging up all the roads and water lines all at once. It’s going to create havoc,” Dixson said. “BEFCO had a great idea about doing a quadrant at a time, so that’s what I’m going to talk to the other engineering firm about.”
