Weimar interim police chief resigns

WEIMAR — Interim Police Chief Lt. Joshua “Josh” Jones provided his two weeks’ notice of resignation to the Weimar Police Department, Monday, Aug. 25.

Jones joined the Weimar Police Department in March 2023 as a patrol sergeant and received a promotion to lieutenant in February 2025. Jones was named interim chief of police in April following the resignation of former Chief J. Mark Jameson. His resignation comes unexpectedly but with a two-week notice with the last day set for Friday, Sept. 12. Jones provided the Colorado County Citizen with a written statement instead of an interview.

“My decision to leave stems from a desire to pursue new professional opportunities that aligns with my vision and integrity; will allow me to grow in my career and further serve the broader community in a new capacity,” Jones wrote. “While this next chapter brings excitement, it also comes with the bittersweet emotions of leaving a department, city and citizens that I have been proud to serve.”

City officials have been searching for a police chief since Jameson’s resignation. Jones did apply for the vacant police chief position but did not meet the position’s 15-year experience requirement, according to City Manager Don Dixson. Dixson said the city is going through pre-employment investigations with one applicant for the police chief position. Jones clarified that being denied the position did not motivate his resignation.

“To the citizens of Weimar: thank you for your trust, support, and collaboration over the years. Please know that my departure does not reflect any dissatisfaction with this community,” Jones wrote. “Rather, it is a personal decision aimed at embracing new challenges and continued growth. I have great confidence in the current direction of the Weimar Police Department and know that you remain in capable hands.”

In his statement, Jones revealed that he decided to further his career in law enforcement with Fayette County Sherrif’s Office. He detailed his dedication to “advancing the principles of community policing, public trust, and justice.”

A new interim police chief for Weimar has not been named. Weimar Police Department currently only has two sergeants and two officers with vacancies for two officers. The next city council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m.
