The Columbus Lady Cardinals volleyball team finished 7th out of 28 teams at the Needville volleyball Tournament this past week.
The Lady Cards posted a 4-2 record during their time at the tournament and played the likes of Bay City, Alief Elsik, Victoria East (twice), Dickinson and Needville.
Vs. Bay City, W, 2-0
In their first game the Lady Cardinals took on the Bay City Blackcats and the Lady Cards made quick work of the match. They won both their sets rather quickly and displayed their offensive and defensive talent.
The first set ended with a score of 25-8 and the second set ended with a score of 25-14 for Columbus to win the match. This was the first of six games though and the Lady Cards were just starting to get comfortable.
Vs. Alief Elsik, W, 2-0 In game two of the tournament the Lady Cards took on the Alief Elsik Rams and once again the match only needed two sets to decide a winner. The Lady Cards were all over the Rams during game two so much so that they pitched a shutout in the first set.
Yes, you read that right, in the first set the Lady Cards defeated the Rams by a score of 25-0. Which is impressive in its own right.
Then the Lady Cards came back in the second set and unfortunately the shutout was broken but they held the Rams to only eight points as the Lady Cards really flexed their defensive muscles in this match.
Vs. Victoria East, W, 2-1 In game three of the tournament for the Lady Cards was also the first game that used all three sets funnily enough. They started the match off with a 25-19 win in the first set over Victoria East Titans.
In the second set though the Titans came storming back and won the second set by a score of 25-19. That brought the game to the third and final set and both teams were ready to leave it all on the court.
In the third set of the match both teams got their shots in, but it was the Lady Cardinals that ended up pulling away with the lead late in the game. The Lady Cards held onto the lead and finished the match with a 25-20 victory over the Titans.
Vs. Dickinson, L, 2-0
Moving onto game four of the tournament and this is where things got interesting for the Lady Cards because they were handed their first loss of the tournament. Not only that but it was also only their third loss of the year.
It started out rough for the Lady Cards too in this match as they dropped the first set with a score of 2516 in favor of the Dickinson Gators. That’s a bit uncharacteristic of the Lady Cards not to lose the set but to lose the set by so much.
That team holds themselves to a hirer standard and in the second set they returned to form but still came up just short. The Lady Cards bounced back in the second set by scoring 22 points after only mustering up 16 in the first.
Vs. Needville, L, 2-1
Game five saw the Lady Cards pick up their fourth loss of the season as they were defeated by the host team, the Needville Bluejays. The Lady Cards lost the first set by a score of 25-21 leaving a sour taste in their mouth going into the second set because that was now the third set in a row they lost.
They came back in the second set and limited the Bluejays to only 15 points while the Lady Cards dominated on offense to win the set 25-15. In the third set the Bluejays returned the favor to the Lady Cards as the Bluejays defeated the Lady Cards 25-15 in the final set.
This was a wakeup call for the Lady Cards as they are not used to losing backto- back games like that and were ready to bounce back.
Vs. Victoria East, W, 2-0 In their final game at the tournament the Lady Cards found themselves matched up with the Titans once more. This time though the Lady Card did not let the match make it to the third set.
In the first set the Lady Cards took the win by a score of 25-14 and then int he second set it was much closer, but the Lady Cards picked up a 25-22 win. This ranked the Lady Cards 7th out of the 28 teams in the tournament to cap out their time in Needville.
The Lady Cards now look ahead in their schedule where they will face a Colorado County Rival on Thursday, Sept 11, when they take on the Rice Lady Raiders.
