COLUMBUS CARDINALS 49, LA GRANGE LEOPARDS 7
The Columbus Cardinals picked up their first win of the season after the defeated the La Grange Leopard 49-7 on Friday night This comes after the Cardinals’ week one loss to Cuero on their home field by a score of 28-21.
The loss obviously left a sour taste in the Cardinals mouth because they are used to stacking up wins early in the season. Against Cuero, the Cardinals offense struggled mightily at times, but it was week one football at to only lose by a touchdown to a 4A school isn’t the worst outcome.
But Columbus wanted to show that they are still and very formidable opponent and on Friday the Leopards found out just how formidable the Cards still are. La Grange found out early on in that game that John Schobel and Anthony Shorter are gone but the Columbus defense is still just as fast and just as strong.
After a long drive the Columbus defense came up big and stopped La Grange at their own 38-yard line. Jack Schobel led the offense onto the field and then led them down the field to open the scoring after connecting with Brannan Hicks for a passing touchdown.
This comes after a week where Schobel completed only one of his 10 pass attempts against Cuero. He came in against La Grange and went a perfect 8-8 for 125 yards and one touchdown in a bounce back game for Schobel under center.
With the Cards up 7-0 La Grange stormed back down the field to try to tie the game up, but the Cards defense came up with possibly the biggest stop of the game. They made it all the way down to the Columbus 5-yard line and the Cardinal defense forced a turnover on downs.
Schobel once again led the offense on a scoring drive capped off by a 30-yard touchdown run by Schobel that put the Cardinals up 14-0. The score was 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and Columbus was just getting warmed up.
To start the second half Hicks got in on the fun as he carried in his first touchdown of the evening. Shortly after he picked up his second rushing touchdown of the game and put the Cards up 28-0 with a little over two minutes left to play in the second quarter.
Then finally at the end of the first half Doc Cantu was given the ball and he punched one in to put the Cards up 35-0 at halftime.
Coming out of the half Brannan Hicks scored his third touchdown of the night giving him four total touchdowns (one passing three rushing) in Friday’s game. That offensive drive was followed by Brody Vinklarek snatching his second interception in the 2025 season.
The turnover led to another touchdown for Columbus as Schobel ran in his second touchdown of the game to go up 49-0 over La Grange. Late in the third quarter La Grange was finally able to break through the Columbus defense and score their first touchdown of the game to arrive at a final score of 49-7.
The Cards now look ahead to their next matchup on the road against Needville in the battle of the bird on Friday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m.
