The Rice Raiders played their first road game of the 2025 season and unfortunately, they came home with a loss of 34-15 to the Shnier Comanches.
This was the second loss on the Raiders record this season as they continue to search for a way to get their offense going.
Offensively the Raiders have been struggling a little bit to get points on the board to start the year. Losing a productive running back like Dyren Johnson is always a tough task for all coaching staffs across Texas.
For the Raiders, it is no different. Johnson posted a total of 1,039 yards and eight touchdowns for the Raiders and that type of production does not grow on trees.
The Raiders have been using multiple different backs so far this season to try to spark the offense and on Friday night they went with Brayden James, Ta’rell Tarver, Kor’dae Johnson and Glenn Mills out of the back field.
These four combined to run the ball 21 times for a total of 36 yards and one touchdown. The Raiders have big goals planned for this year that include making the playoffs and if they are going to give themselves a shot at achieving those goals and making the playoffs, they have to improve in the running game.
Their passing game is in fine shape though thanks to the talented quarterback play of Kor’dae Johnson. He finished Fri- Continued from 8

day’s game completing 16 of his 20 passes for 167 yards and one touchdown, Johnson also threw an interception in Friday’s loss which is another thing the Raiders will look to clean up before their next game.
The leading receivers for the Raiders Friday night were AJ Jenkins and Isaiah Castillo who caught a combined 10 passes for 97 yards and one touchdown that was caught by Jenkins.
As for the defense of the Raiders they have just as tough of a task replacing pretty much their entire defensive line from last season. The anchor on the Raiders defensive line last season was Deveron Bennett and since he graduated the Raiders need to find someone to fill in that spot to both stop the run and affect the quarterback.
This is going to be possibly the toughest position the Raider shave to replace this season because they have to find a way to affect the quarterback, get sacks, force turnovers and get the ball back in the offense’s hands.
That’s easier said than done sometimes, but the Raiders will have a great opportunity to get their offense and defense back on track when they take on the Weimar Wildcats Thursday night, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m. for a Colorado County Showdown.
