The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) observe Constitution Day each year on Sept. 17, commemorating the anniversary of its signing in 1787. The John Everett Chapter encourages all citizens to read it, as well as the 27 amendments, in order to know your rights.
In celebration, this year the chapter donated Constitution Day packets to all Columbus area 8th graders. These packets include a pocket Constitution, Preamble bookmark, small flag, pencil, activity pad, flag pin, and friendship bracelet.
These were distributed to Columbus Junior High and St. Anthony Catholic schools, as well as the home school group that meets at Nesbitt Memorial Library. Additionally, the book, Texas Before the Lone Star, compiled by the Texas Society of the DAR was also donated to each group. Finally, an exhibit about the Constitution was arranged by chapter members and is on display at the Nesbitt Memorial Library throughout the week.
