NEEDVILLE BLUE JAYS 17, COLUMBUS CARDINALS 13
The Columbus Cardinals have fallen to 1-2 to start the 2025 season after losing their game Friday night.
The Cardinals traveled to Needville to take on the Needville Blue Jays and ended up coming home with a 17-13 loss.
The game started as a defensive battle as neither team gave up a point in the first quarter. It’s not the flashiest version of football but it kind of set the tone for a game that saw neither team score 20 or more points.
In the second quarter is when they scoreboard got some action as the Blue Jays opened the scoring with a field goal to go up 3-0. Then the Cardinals came storming down the field to score the games first touchdown.
Leading 7-3 going into halftime the Cardinals knew they were going to have to find some more explosive plays offensively in the second half. With both defenses playing as well as they did in the first half and get on the board quickly in the third quarter and they did exactly that.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals though, the Blue Jays were able to find the endzone twice in the third quarter. This took a 13-3 ball game in favor of the Cardinals and made it a 17-13 ball game and that score held for the rest of the game.
What went wrong for Columbus is that they had too many turnovers that led to points for the Blue Jays. The Cardinals had a total of five turnovers Friday night that included three fumbles and two interceptions.
It’s hard to win any football game but it is even harder if the offense is giving the opposing team the ball back. The Cardinals will undoubtedly be working this week to clean up the turnovers and get ready to bounce back in week four.
Offensively Jack Schobel completed nine of his 17 pass attempts (53% completion percentage) for 58 yards and a touchdown. Ty Wiggs was the recipient of the Schobel touchdown pass and was tied with Brennan Hicks with 13 yards.
Schobel was also a big factor in the rushing attack as he carried the ball 17 times for 127 yards. Right behind him was Doc Cantu who carried the ball nine times for 29 yards.
Columbus now sets their sights on their week four matchup against Madisonville on Friday, Sept. 19, where they will look to get back in the win column on home field.
