Due to unexpected equipment failure and ongoing dry weather conditions, the City of Columbus is implementing Stage 1, a mild drought "Watch" condition, of its Drought Contingency Plan. Effective September 17, 2025, residents and businesses are asked to voluntarily reduce their water use.
Our current water supply is adequate for essential uses. However, a coordinated effort to conserve water now will help protect our water supply should conditions worsen and mandatory restrictions become necessary.
What is Stage 1?
Stage 1 is a voluntary water conservation phase triggered when any or all of the following conditions are met; average daily water consumption reaches 90% of production capacity for a period of three consecutive days, weather conditions are to be considered in drought classification determination, or loss of production in one well. This stage is intended to raise public awareness and encourage conservation practices.
Voluntary conservation measures We request that all customers voluntarily limit non-essential water use and follow these guidelines:
· Outdoor watering: Limit outdoor watering of lawns and landscapes. If you must water, do so during cooler hours to minimize evaporation, such as before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. Use drip irrigation systems or hand-held hoses whenever possible.
· Vehicle washing: Postpone vehicle washing or limit it to one day per week, using a hand-held hose with a shutoff nozzle. Use a commercial car wash that recycles water when possible.
· Aesthetics: Avoid or reduce the refilling of swimming pools and the operation of ornamental fountains, unless the water is recirculated.
· General usage: Take shorter showers, fix all leaks, and run dishwashers and clothes washers only with full loads.
Why we need your help
Conserving water now helps ensure a sustainable and reliable water supply for everyone, especially for essential needs like sanitation and fire protection. The cheapest and most dependable source of water is the water we save.
We will continue to monitor water conditions and will provide further updates as the situation changes. We appreciate your cooperation in conserving our most valuable resource.
