The Columbus Lady Cardinals took on the Yoakum Bulldogs Tuesday night for their fifth district win of the season.
The Lady Cards went to defeat the Bulldogs in three straight sets to sweep them out of the building to improve their district record to 5-0.
The Lady Cards came out swinging to start the match and barely gave the Bulldogs a chance to breathe defensively. The Lady Cards offense played at a very fast pace to start the match and the Bulldogs just could not find an answer for them.
The Lady Cards cruised to a 25-17 victory in the first set, but this party was just getting started. The Lady Cards came into the second set looking to carry over the momentum they built in the first set.
They did just that as their offense continued to execute like a well-oiled machine that just knew how to score. Defensively the Lady Cards were a wall at the net and did a great job of hunting down the ball in the air and getting underneath it to keep the point alive.
They ended up winning the second set with a score of 25-15 and was now only one set win away from sweeping the Bulldogs.
In the third set the Bulldogs came back and threw everything at the Lady Cards trying to claw their way back into this game. But the Lady Cards never blinked and stayed the course and came away with a 25-19 win in the third and final set to win the match.
The Lady Cards offense was led by Gracie Schobel who racked up 11 kills during Tuesday night’s victory. Just behind her was Harper Gerik and Thea Schobel who each had seven kills and then Demi Roecker slammed down five kills on their way to defeating the Bulldogs.
Someone had to assisted all of these kills and two people made major contributions as they combined for 29 assists. Riley Kainer led the Lady Cards with 18 assists Tuesday night, and Lucy Schobel was not too far behind her with 11 assists.
Then defensively the Lady Cards were led by Mary Fitzgerald who recorded nine digs in Tuesday night’s win. Caylie Neisner, Riley Kainer and Lucy Schobel all recorded eight digs during Tuesday night’s win over Yoakum.
The Lady Cards now look ahead in their schedule where they are set to take on the Edna Cowgirls on Tuesday, Sept. 30, in Edna looking to improve their district record even more.
